PROPOSED SCHEME FOR MENTAL HEALTH APPRENTICES: Keith Johnson

Each hospitalised schizophrenic costs the health service £1000 per month.

Say the average stay in a ward is 6 months. If by using former patients as apprentices and using their own knowledge to lead others out of their problems, they manage to get a typical voice hearer out in one month, then this will save lives, and also save the health service £4000 per head.

If such apprentices work as two person teams on one schizophrenic, and never tackle it en mass, and they get paid £500 each for each person helped out early, then by doing two a day, they each earn £1000 per day.

Squads of 200 such apprentices, whose wages are managed by a hospital administrator or psychiatrist for a fee of £40 per head of patients they help, the sums are thus:- 200 each getting £1000 per day for a 200 day working year, each apprentice gets £200,000 pa less expenses and tax. The expenditure is £40 million per squad, and the manager gets £3.2 million per annum for seeing that the health service payments run smoothly, and covering insurance and logistics.

So the annual expenditure per squad is £43.2 million, but the saving to the health service is around 4 times that, at around £160 million per squad per annum.

If 100 psychiatrists or managers run 100 squads of apprentices, the saving is on the order of 16 thousand million pounds. And if these squads of 200 apprentices went global, after sorting out the mental wards in their own country, that would save lives and really pull in the money. Remember the individuals comprising the squads will have found solutions to their own problems, and by using their joint experience can give the answers to problems their patients are presently experiencing.

If their earnings were paid directly to their bank accounts, and accessed by their direct debit cards, when they had done a year, they would have more than sufficient assets to start up cooperative businesses, and thus revitalise the economy.
